TVTalkShows.com: "A report on my session and dealings with Sylvia Browne"

A woman makes an appointment for a phone reading with Sylvia Browne, then regrets having done so.

"...her assisant explained how the session would progress. You are not allowed to ask about missing persons nor about missing items. I thought this to be strange and I asked her why."

- TVTalkShows.com message poster

Background

As I've mentioned elsewhere on this website, I occasionally hear people say "What does it matter whether Sylvia Browne is a fraud or not? She is just giving comfort to people. What's the harm in that?"

Well, I've given examples which show that she doesn't always "comfort" people, such as in the article about the Opal Jo Jennings reading.

But here is a case where a woman could well have suffered very real long-term harm from a Sylvia Browne reading.

The Posts

TVTalkShows.com is an internet message forum where various TV talk shows are discussed by those who love and hate them.

One of the sections of the forum is the "Montel Williams and Psychic Sylvia Browne Fan Forum Message Board", devoted to discussions of that show, and of Williams and Browne.

While reading through it, I found an interesting thread (a group of messages on a specific topic) titled "A report on my session and dealings with Sylvia Browne". The following posts (messages) are from that thread, and are reproduced here by permission of the tvtalkshows.com webmaster.

All emphasis mine.

A report on my session and dealings with Sylvia Browne

07-19-2006, 03:03 PM

Darcel chester

Back in June of 2005 I put my name on a waiting list to have a private session with Sylvia Browne. Four days ago her office called and we set up an appointment for August 14th 2006.

I had heard that the waiting list was four years long. If the dates here are accurate, it was just over one year in this woman's case.

The message continues:

They required payment at the time of the booking so I gave her my bank number as requested. After payment was made, Helen, her assisant explained how the session would progress. You are not allowed to ask about missing persons nor about missing items. I thought this to be strange and I asked her why. She really did not have an answer for this. She said Sylvia would start out telling me about myself then I should follow up with very specific question.

Interesting that Browne does not take questions regarding missing persons nor missing items. She claims in her books and on television that she finds missing people all the time. Why would she not want to take questions about them?

More on this later.

The message continues:

My main reason I want to have a session with Sylvia is to find out when my husband and myself are going to pass into spirit. The reason for wanting to know this is because of life insurance premiums we are paying on. If I am to die before my husband we can do away with the policy or if he is going to live beyond age 75 then we should be investing these premiums elswhere. The policy is term and expires at age 75 for him. This is a very important question and it is very important that the answer I receive is absolutely accurate.

If I am correct, and Browne is only pretending to be psychic, playing "cold-reading" guessing games with the people who come to her for help and advice, then this woman was planning on making an extremely important life decision, which could have a long-lasting impact on her and her husband's financial well-being, on Sylvia's guess.

The results could well be tragic, but would Sylvia be held responsible for those results? Of course not. She would have her $700, and that would be the end of it as far as she would be concerned.

The message continues:

After setting up the appointment I started doing research on the internet to hear feed back from other people that have had readings. After spending countless hours on this research I am afraid I made a terible mistake. The reports from others, few as they were, were not good. Reading about her predictions about world events was dismal.

Web pages listing some of Browne's many failed "world event" predictions can be found in the Related Links section below.

The message continues:

There is no way at this point that I could trust her answer to my question. I know, I know, I should of researched this before making the appoinment and spending our hard earned money. I guess I didn’t because of her association with Montel. I need to learn to not be so trusting.

At this point I have called her office and left a message for them to call me back. Actually I left two messages. The first one was a please call me at ---. The second one I explain in short detail why I needed the call back. I said I had done the research and was very disappointed in what I discovered so I would like to cancel my appointment and have them put the money back in my account. I also stated, please don’t make me go thru with this session because if it is as bad as I suspect it will be I will use my voice and let the world know.

I haven’t heard back from them yet but it has only been a couple of hours. I will keep you informed on how this goes. I won’t be surprised if they don’t refund my money and if that is so I will be forced to go thru with the session. I will make the most of it to investgate for all of you the accuracy of what she says. I will keep you informed about the predictions she gives for my future. I will ask some trick questions to see if she picks up on them.

Today is July 9th 2006 so I hope you enjoy following along with me through this expensive ride I am on.

I wish more people would report on their experiences with her. It would be such a great help to all of us contemplating having a session with Sylvia. I know it would of helped me. But again the information I did find was not pretty, not pretty at all.

Let me end by saying I do believe that the psychic gift is genuine but the problem is finding the genuine psychic.

More to come as this adventure of mine progresses

The Second Post

The following day, she entered another post on the thread:

It is possible my story is over. Sylvia's office called and said I can have my money returned. I will know for sure in three days because by then the money should show up back into my account.

The Third Post

Five days later, she posted the following:

Well I got my money back which was a big surprise I must say.

I have been doing more research on Sylvia since all this began by reading articles on the internet and listening to the archives of her radio show on hayhouse.

The radio show is a good place to pick up on some updates. People call in and bring up the fact that she had predicted something in the past for them and they are wondering why it did not happen like she said it would. She of course always has an excuse. I have heard her make excuses for her son also. One guy called in and ask about his love life and she said he would meet a pretty blonde female in such and such time. He was obviously confused and told her so. He then revealed he was gay. Her answer was thats okay I almost married a gay guy once. I am still in the process of listening to her archive shows so I am sure there is more to come.

In reading about some high profile predictions that went bad it is amazing anyone puts any type of faith in her. Do a simple search on Sylvia and you can see what I am talking about. Most people that stand up for her, I noticed, are going on blind faith. If they would put on a skeptics eyes for a short bit then their blind faith would be no more I am sure.

At this point I wish I had $700 to blow to have this reading with her so I could report on a true reading from her but I am not rich so that is out of the question. I wish more people that had readings would report on them. I would bet they are to embarresed to admit that they spent $700 for nothing.

Analysis

So, a happy ending of sorts. She got her money back. Is this policy at Browne's office, or was it only because this woman had let them know she was going to "let the world know" if she got a disappointing reading?

Regarding Browne's not answering questions about missing persons, the following is a quote from her official web site's Frequently Asked Questions page:

Can Sylvia help find a missing person or solve a murder?

Sadly the ongoing flood of requests for help with crimes and missing persons has become impossible to manage. Sylvia is only a single person and simply cannot handle any more cases at this time.

This does not seem to make sense. If she has the time to spend 20-30 minutes on the phone with someone (at a fee of $750), why can't she spend that time answering questions about a missing person or a murder?

We have already discussed on the site two missing persons cases (Ryan Katcher and Opal Jo Jennings) where Browne was totally incorrect.

Perhaps Browne does not want to deal with calls from people upset that she was wrong about tragedies such as these.

Conclusion

It is frightening that people are willing to make such important decisions based on the "psychic predictions" of Browne, and others like her.

"What's the harm" in what Browne does?

Even though this woman did not go through with her phone reading, her messages provide us with a clear example of just one type of harm Sylvia Browne's "readings" can cause.
