Novus Spiritus - Delaware Breaks Away
Why the Delaware branch of Novus Spiritus left the fold.
Background
This article documents yet another branch of Sylvia Browne's church, the Society of Novus Spiritus (SNS) disassociating itself both from Browne and from the Society.
The article will be of interest primarily to current and former SNS members, but others may be interested in this peek into the church's attempts to control its members and ministers.

The Story
In November of 2004, the new Society of Novus Spiritus - Delaware branch held its first service.
Less than three years later, despite a reported average attendance of 40-45 congregants every Sunday, the Delaware branch disassociated itself with Sylvia Browne and with SNS.
Nancy Williams, the minister of the Delaware church, announced her resignation from SNS in this email, sent to all SNS ministers.
Letter to the Board
April 1, 2007
Dear Board Members:
It is with heavy heart that I am resigning from the ministry with the Society of Novus Spiritus effective Sunday, April 8, 2007. My decision was made after months of soul searching and seeking Mother God’s guidance.
When I started holding services in November 2004, I knew from the moment of the first service that my mission was to bring Mother’s message to those desperately searching for spirituality apart from dogmatic traditional religions but find that there will always be dogma attached to anything that becomes a “religion”. The "challenges" that I’ve faced as a minister with the Society of Novus Spiritus have overshadowed the joy in spreading God’s love.
The Gnostic traditions as well as the Novus Spiritus philosophy are beautiful ones and will remain part of my life until I’ve returned Home. I will continue to honor Mother and Father God and spread Their message of love and goodness whenever, wherever I can.
My experiences from the time I began this mission many years ago as a volunteer at Sylvia’s lectures to being ordained are ones that I will treasure always.
I have informed Kathy Seacrist of my decision as she has assisted with the services in Delaware. She is aware that she’s welcome to continue the services on her own but she advised me that she will not do so. Therefore, our final Society of Novus Spiritus service will be held on Sunday, April 8, 2007 and I have shared my decision with the congregation at the service this morning.
As I will no longer be involved with the study group program, please cancel my automatic payment for study group fees effective May 1, 2007 and reassign the study group coordinators to a new Liaison.
I ask that each of you please respect my decision and understand that this is what I have to do for me.
Sylvia, I will forever cherish what I have learned through your teachings as well as your kindness on those occasions when we’ve had personal conversations. You brought closure to me in 1987 when I finally understood the meaning for my husband’s sudden death. And I will be forever grateful for your support as well as your words to me about my grandson TJ and his health as he is the most precious person in my life.
To the rest of the board, I have learned many valuable, life changing lessons through my relationships with each of you and those lessons helped to shape who I am today as well as the direction for the remainder of my tomorrows.
Sincerely,
Rev. Nancy Williams

Although the letter avoids mentioning the reasons behind Williams' leaving the organization, I have been told that this was something Williams had discussed with her congregation at great length, and that the congregation as a whole made the decision to break away from SNS.
One member of the Delaware church has shared some of the reasons with me - confirming what other ex-SNS members had communicated to me as well: Williams and her congregation were, quite simply, tired of the SNS board and its demands.
Some examples:
- The board chastised Williams for preaching a sermon based on a book written by someone other than Sylvia Browne.
- The board was requiring Williams to send 10% of her Sunday collections back to headquarters, despite the fact that those donations barely covered the cost of renting the hall where the services were held (and sometimes didn't even cover that, resulting in Williams paying for the hall out of her own pocket).
- The board chastised Williams for having preached a sermon without wearing her official SNS robes.
There is more, but (as I understand it), bottom line, the Delaware congregation felt that the SNS board was being controlling and more concerned with making money than with the philosophy they supposedly promoted.

Letter From the Board
A week after Williams' letter, the SNS board sent out the following to all SNS ministers (emphasis mine):
Dear Ministers,
As of April 8th 2007 The Society of Novus Spiritus™ regretfully announces the closure of the The Society of Novus Spiritus™ church in Delaware. The ministers Nancy Williams and Kathy Seacrist have chosen to resign effective this date. The Society of Novus Spiritus™ thanks them for their time, hard work and dedication to sharing the Novus philosophy. We wish them well as they continue to seek and grow spiritually. Society of Novus Spiritus™ is still in the growing stages and we would like to acknowledge those who honor their commitment and walk this journey of life. We know the pressures come from many sources but there is also strength in numbers in the knowledge that the MISSION is truly for AZNA and OM. Any further concerns or questions pertaining to this closing can be referred to a Governing Board Member.
In Love and Gratitude for your Commitment to sharing this philosophy,
Governing Board Members of the Society of Novus Spiritus™
(NOTE: In SNS, "Azna" and "Om" are the names for "mother god" and "father god.")
I have been told by several people that Williams was well known and respected in the SNS community, that there were a lot of people wondering why she left the organization, and that this email was the board's attempt at "damage control."
The statement I highlighted in the board's letter was seen by many as a slap to Williams and Seacrist, insinuating that they had not "honored their commitment."

Williams' Response
Williams wrote the following response, sent to all ministers (emphasis hers):
To my Fellow Gnostics,
After the office sent an email regarding my resignation, I have been contacted by many of you. To all those who have left messages or sent emails with your heartfelt wishes, thank you. The outpouring of love, support and understanding means more to me than words can convey. God bless each of you.
To those who have asked why I chose to leave the ministry with Novus Spiritus, please respect that my reasons are personal and not something I wish to discuss.
Many of you who know me well, would never doubt my commitment to this MISSION as well as to AZNA and OM, but after reading the email that was sent to each of you, I felt the need to assure those who may not know me as well as others do, that I will ALWAYS honor my commitment to this Gnostic MISSION as well as to AZNA and OM, which I assured Sylvia of as well in my letter to her. Being part of the ministry is only one of many ways we can each honor our commitment to AZNA and OM as one does not need to wear a collar to be a minister.
While I agree that pressures come from many sources and there certainly can be strength in "numbers", motive and intent is what will guarantee the success of this MISSION, numbers alone will not. It is vital that those who are included in those "numbers" are truly honoring the mission that we all agreed to before coming into this incarnation. As I move forward in this “journey of life” with this "magnificent obsession", I may be leaving many things behind, to include some people, but our beautiful philosophy is not and never will be one of them.
As Sylvia said in Journey of the Soul, Topic 8, "The light is there for all of us. Once we begin to be controlled by anything, or anyone, or any situation, we have really, truly lost our own internal centeredness, our Godcenteredness."
So wherever your “journey of life” leads you in honoring your commitment to AZNA and OM as well as this MISSION, always remember the importance of honoring your "own internal centeredness, your Godcenteredness." It is what Mother AZNA expects of all Her children.
God bless you and always remember:
"Gratitude is not to any other human being except yourself.
The loyalty you must have to your own belief system,
The commitment you must have to your own life that you are living, but especially the gratitude that you must have for your own soul’s development."
-Journey of the Soul, Topic 8
In gratitude, loyalty and commitment,
Rev. Nancy Williams
This reads to me as though Williams is using Browne's own writings to show that the board is not necessarily living up to its own philosophy.

Analysis
Although more subtle and indirect than the letters announcing the breakaway of the Canadian branch, these letters from the Delaware branch seem to also indicate an opinion that SNS as an organization is more interested in controlling its members and making money than in anyone's "spiritual growth."

Conclusion
Although multiple ex-SNS members shared the information with me which I have included with the above letters, I am interested in hearing any other versions of the story that anyone would care to send.
If Nancy Williams, Kathy Seacrist or members of the SNS board have any pertinent statements they wish added to this story, I would be glad to place them in this article.
NOTE (added Dec 14 2007): Rev. Williams has provided me with a statement, which can be read in Novus Spiritus: Delaware Breaks Away (Part 2).
It should be noted that many of the ex-SNS people who have contacted me continue to follow the Gnostic principals on which SNS claims it is based. They no longer believe in Browne's abilities, nor in the Society as an organization (particularly the board), but continue on a Gnostic "spiritual path" without them.
The Delaware branch is evidently going to do just that. I have been told that they will be continuing to meet and study together, without worrying about what the SNS Board thinks.
Who knows, they might even study books not written by Sylvia Browne...
My thanks to the ex-NS members who shared the above information with me.
