| Louise Hay: Does She Endorse Sylvia Browne? She has published many of Browne's books. But what does she think of her? Published: Jun 02 2008 Louise Hay BackgroundI occasionally receive emails from people asking me if Louise Hay is aware of Browne's many failures, and her abysmal track record where predictions are concerned (For those not familiar with Hay, she is an author of various self-help books, as well as the founder and owner of Hay House Publishing, which puts out New Age and Self-Help books by a whole stable of authors, including Sylvia Browne). These people tell me that they admire Hay, and the fact that Hay publishes Sylvia Browne's books seems to imply that she endorses Browne's "abilities." I cannot know what Hay thinks of Browne, but recently, two things have happened which I find to be of interest, and which may shed some light on the issue. New York Times Article Hay's first book, "You Can Heal Your Life" On May 4 2008, the New York Times published "Queen of the New Age", a multi-page article written by Mark Oppenheimer, profiling Hay. Towards the end of the article, Oppenheimer discusses what he believes to be Hay House's lack of interest in their authors' professional credentials. He then goes on to say (emphasis mine):
Her evasive non-answer when asked whether she likes the works of Sylvia Browne is quite interesting. There are many people out there who purchase Hay House titles because they believe that Louise Hay, by publishing them, is tacitly endorsing Browne's works and her psychic abilities. But the implication here seems to be that Louise Hay is more concerned with her authors' popularity than in the truth and accuracy of the books they write. Also, in looking at Browne's books published by Hay House, I have yet to notice any statements by Louise Hay endorsing Browne. Does she give such endorsements to any of her other authors? In at least one place, yes. On the back cover of Hay House book Ask and It is Given (by authors Esther and Jerry Hicks), Louise Hay says the following:
Has Hay given such a ringing endorsement of any of Browne's books? If so, I have yet to see it. If anyone knows of one, please let me know, and I will add it to this article. Hay House's "Sylvia Browne's Spring Clearance Sale" Image from "Sylvia Browne's Spring Clearance Sale" email The other interesting thing which has been brought to my attention is the fact that Hay House has recently put all of their Sylvia Browne titles on clearance sale. Here is an email sent out to their mailing list:
AnalysisDoes Hay's non-opinion about Sylvia Browne in the NY Times article mean that she does not endorse Browne? Not necessarily. But that is the impression I get from it, particularly since the writer of the article - who heard Hay's response in person - seemed to think so as well. Does Hay House's "Spring Clearance" on their Browne titles have any significance? Hard to say. Perhaps they want to get rid of her books while they can, before another Shawn Hornbeck-level mistake is made public, reducing Browne's marketability even further. Perhaps they are simply trying to wring whatever money they can out of her books before Browne retires. Or perhaps it is not connected to Browne's waning career, but they simply are trying to reduce an overstock. ConclusionIn short, it is impossible to know exactly what either of the above items means. But I find them both to be interesting, and have put them here on the site for readers to consider. If Louise Hay, or any of her representatives at Hay House Publishing wish to send me Hay's thoughts on Sylvia Browne, I will gladly publish them here on this site.
