Sylvia Browne and "The Mentalizer"

Dec 13 2007 Robert S. Lancaster

Browne declares a mentalist's feats to be paranormal. What does the mentalist say?

Ehud Segev, 'The Mentalizer'

Ehud Segev, "The Mentalizer"

Background

What is a mentalist?

A mentalist is simply a stage magician who uses sleight-of-hand and a knowledge of human psychology in order to create the illusion of psychic powers.

A mentalist is not "psychic." He or she does not have any "paranormal powers." As part of a mentalist's act, he or she may (and usually will) say that what they do is achieved using mystical, or paranormal abilities. But it is part of the act, much like a non-mentalist magician will pretend that they have really sawed the lady in half, or really made the four aces "jump" to the top of a deck.

Steve Shaw, a world-class mentalist who performs under the stage name Banachek, says it this way at the end of his performances:

"Ladies and gentlemen, I use my five senses to create the illusion of a sixth."

This article examines some of what happened when Israeli mentalist Ehud Segev met Sylvia Browne on the Montel Williams Show.

The Show

Segev, Browne and Williams

Segev, Browne and Williams

On February 3rd of 2006, Sylvia Browne appeared on the Montel Williams Show, but not in her usual capacity as a guest. On this episode, titled "The Friday Show With Sylvia", Browne co-hosted along with Williams.

The first guest that day was Ehud Segev, an Israeli mentalist who refers to himself as The Mentalizer.

Mr. Segev performed several mentalist routines that day, and he performed them well. But what was most interesting to me was Sylvia Browne's reaction to his performance.

Williams watched as Segev 'bends' a spoon.

Williams watches as Segev "bends" a spoon.

First, while Segev performed a spoon-bending routine, the following exchange took place (all emphasis mine):

(Note: The entire video may be viewed here.)

(Ehud) Segev: Guys, are you ready?

(Montel) Williams: Yes.

(Sylvia) Browne: I'm ready.

[Segev waves one hand over the spoon which is laying in the palm of his other hand. The spoon appears to bend.]

Browne: There it goes.

Williams: [amazed] You know what? Now homey, now wait a minute.

Browne: No, he's really doing it.

Williams: I'm watching it from right here...

Browne: No, it's not sleight-of-hand.

No, it was sleight-of-hand. And some casual searching of the Internet will show how it is done.

Segev: Nothing is special about it. You really need to see it from up close. Watch it very closely as it happens

[...]

Segev: To the camera, so they can see how it happens!

[The spoon appears to bend even further.]

Browne: That's right. That's right. It's called kinetic energy.

No, it is a simple (though well-executed) magic trick, and kinetic energy has nothing to do with it.

Moments later, after Segev performs a fork-bending routine...

Williams: Look, you know what? I gotta take a little break, but when we come back, we're gonna do some other things like this word trick that you have [unintelligible]. Let me take a little break, and we'll be back after this.

[Applause]

Browne: That's right. [To Segev, as break music plays] You know, you could be a healer!

Segev performs the 'touch' routine.

Segev performs the "touch" routine.

After the commercial, Segev performs another mentalist routine in which he touches one person (Browne) while a second person (an audience volunteer) apparently feels that touch. It is a clever routine, invented by the aforementioned Banachek. It is perplexing to the audience, but, like many magic tricks, it has an extremely simple and mundane secret behind it.

At the end of the routine the volunteer returns to the audience, and as Browne, Segev and Williams sit back down, Browne says the following:

Browne: You know... You know what this proves? What he just proved is what I say: energy. People feel energy. He just proved that!

Williams: Absolutely.

Browne: Yeah!

No, what Segev had just proved was that sometimes, the simplest magic tricks are the most effective.

Did Browne Believe It?

From Browne's statements I've highlighted above, it is clear that she either believed that Segev was performing "psychic feats," or she was pretending to.

A case could be made that she was just "playing along" with the act for the sake of the show, but I do not think so. In the past, Browne has expressed total confidence in the "paranormal powers" of another Israeli mentalist, Uri Geller.

On page 169 of her 2005 book Secrets and Mysteries of the World, under the heading "Kinetic Energy and Auras," Browne writes the following:

Physical mediums have it very hard, because kinetic energy is so random. One celebrated psychic of the last century was noted to be a most authentic physical medium, but during one session when nothing happened (as it had so many times before), she resorted to kicking a chair over, and ruined a career that had spanned many years.

Then there's Uri Geller, a physical medium who, regardless of what anyone believes, I know is for real - I've worked with him and have seen what he does. Unfortunately, he came along before his time, and the skeptics have had a field day with him.

A field day indeed. Geller claims not to be a mentalist, even though his small repertoire of tricks has been replicated by magician and skeptic James Randi, using nothing more than sleight-of-hand. In fact, these same tricks (bending spoons/keys, starting stopped watches, causing a compass needle to move, knowing what is in a hidden drawing) are the stock and trade of mentalists the world over.

And even though Geller continues to insist that he does all of these things using only the "power of his mind," he has been filmed many times where he is clearly seen achieving his effects with decidedly non-paranormal means.

What Does Segev Say?

But what about Segev, "The Mentalizer?" Does he also maintain that what he does is supernatural?

Let's see what Segev himself says on the subject.

Segev's Message Board #1

On the message forum on Segev's web site, user "Weewop" asks him about his appearance on the Montel Williams Show.

Here is an excerpt from Segev's response:

Thanks so much for your kind words. Though I'm not a real psychic, only a psychic entertainer and as always I want everyone to know I don't have supernatural powers - - - my powers are so natural it's superb :-)

Yes, Sylvia mentioned a few things during my presentation (that will be available on my VIDEO page under MEDIA in the next few days). She said: "He's the real thing, the spoons are really bending, it's kinetic energy" etc... I do use a lot of energy to make spoons bend, I don't use kinetic energy though, I use different energy that of-course I won't share with you here because it's one of my trade secrets...

Segev's Message Board #1

Elsewhere on Segev's forum, he is asked by user "Tessa" about his "supernatural abilities."

Here is an excerpt from Segev's response:

As for my supernatural abilities - don't be confused about it. I don't posses any supernatural abilities and I keep on repeating this because I don't want to create ignorance. I performed alongside people who claimed supernatural abilities (such as Silvya Brown, Jim Callhan and others) and I don't think they really possess these powers. But its up to them to whether to claim they do or not.

NBC's Phenomenon

In 2007, Segev was one of ten mentalists selected to participate in the NBC show Phenomenon.

In his "post-elimination interview" upon leaving the show , Segev was asked "Do you believe in the reality of true physic phenomenon or is it all 'just a trick'?"

Here is his response:

There is no such thing as Supernatural powers. No real psychic out there. Whoever charges money from people to talk to their dead loved ones or to heal them is a big charlatan and people should run away from these people like it was fire. I have very hard feelings with people who claim they have psychic abilities.

Email From Segev

I contacted Ehud Segev on his web site, and asked him if he would like to share some thoughts regarding his appearance with Browne and Williams that day.

Here is what he said:

My first national TV appearance in the US was in the Montel Williams show. They asked me to perform a short segment there for a few minutes and they setup a time to interview me over the phone to get to know me and prepare for the live interview. They wanted to know about my new off-Broadway mentalism production “Anomal” which was half a play and half a mentalist show.

After telling them all about the show they asked me if I knew Sylvia. But I had no idea, since I’m an Israeli guy who arrived to America to perform, not to watch too much TV… They told me that she is a psychic and explained to me that she is almost a ‘second host’ to Montel. They made sure I will not act ‘weird’ with her. I didn’t know who she was or what her story was, yet I was very intrigued by this interview. I figured I have nothing to lose since national exposure is a helpful thing when you’re selling tickets in a big theatre.

I arrived to the studios, and in the green room - on the screen - I saw Sylvia for the first time in my life. The truth is that I also saw Montel for the first time… sorry for my ignorance but I REALLY never watch TV… I found Sylvia a bit disturbing when she mentioned that someone will find a lost instrument behind the closet in their kitchen?!? I said to myself, oh my… what am I getting into?

But then I was called on stage and I started playing around with Montel and Sylvia just like I play with my audiences with no regards to whether they are a ‘TV host’ or a ‘super psychic’. I just enjoyed my time there. Montel was so excited about it all that he said I will remain for another segment (yep, I was only supposed to be there till the commercial break but he asked me to stay after the commercial break for another few minutes).

Retroactively I don’t feel bad about not mentioning that what I performed on the screen was special techniques and nothing ‘real’ because that’s what Mentalism is all about. But I did get hundreds of emails from people who have taken me for the ‘real’ deal. I did however emailed them ALL back and explained I don’t possess real powers but it’s all a learnable skill. I also got some weird voice mails, and one of them is still in my cell’s memory - it’s simply too funny to delete, and I keep saving it - many years later! I hope to - somehow - record it to the computer from my cell phone and post it on my website once. It’s hilarious.

The bottom line: I believe the Sylvia is doing something wrong, but there’s nothing much we can do about her. It’s more about our own circles: us not her. If WE will keep on spreading more understanding out there, to our friends, our crowds and family, they will know better. And they will help us spread the word to their close ones. Someday people will be less ignorant, until that day - Sylvia and people like Edwards will continue to make a (good) living out of ignorance.

Analysis

So, Browne has declared both Segev and Geller to have supernatural powers, when they do not. Why?

She either mistakenly believes it to be true, or she is deliberately lying about it.

If she is mistaken, wouldn't a "real psychic" know that these men were using sleight-of-hand?

If she is lying about it, why?

Conclusion

My personal opinion is that Browne knows that these people do not have paranormal abilities, but claims they do because she knows that it encourages people to blindly accept claims of paranormal abilities without any proof.

If she acknowledged that these seemingly "paranormal" abilities were nothing more than magic tricks, that might encourage people to examine Browne's own supposed abilities a bit more closely.

And I believe that is the last thing Sylvia Browne wants.

My thanks to correspondents SK and GZS for making sure I knew about this clip, and of course to Mr. Ehud Segev, both for his contribution to this article, and for his clear and ethical stand regarding his profession.
